Work with main road 18 in Central Finland started

The Regional Council of Central Finland (RCCF) has main responsibility of implementing general planning on main road 18 in Central Finland. Main road 18 is a recognized bottleneck on the Midnordic Green Transport Corridor - a road that doesn´t fulfill the main road standards.

Main road 18 extends from Jyväskylä to Vaasa, and especially the road part between the municipalities of Multia and Ähtäri is problematic. Improvements of the road would mean better conditions for transport and logistics in the corridor.

NECL II will start up studies, investigations and preliminary engineering for main road 18 between Multia and Ähtäri and accessing regional road 621. The work includes estimates of environmental and other impacts of new roads. In addition a study of reserve routes for situations when the main route 18 cannot be used. RCCF has discussed and planned the work in cooperation with  the municipalities and regional Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.

The main road 18 -work starts now in May with terrain works including air photography and laser scanning. Choosing the consulting firm for preliminary engineering of the road will be made during summer 2011.
